Title: How to manually remove the GoodLink Client from a Pocket PC handheld

Fact: Following are steps on how to manually uninstall the GoodLink Client software from a Pocket PC handheld. Use the “File Explorer” application on the handheld, to delete any of the listed folders or files. This can aslo be done if the device is in it’s cradle and Microsoft Activesync connected using a guest partnership. The extensions of the files will not show unless using the cradle method.

How to Uninstall GoodLink Client From Treo 650 and 600 Without Hard-Reset.

Fact: Here is the procedure to remove GoodLink Client from a Treo 650 / 600 without having to hard-reset the handheld device.

 http://www.good.com/faq/17475.html

Note: Deleting GoodLink Contacts will efectively wipe the contents of the native Palm contacts as well. It is recommended that a Hotsync be done before proceeding. On the Treo 600 buttons may need to be re-mapped.

1. Open the Palm Launcher. Press Menu and select “Delete…”
2. Delete contacts, calendar, notes, tasks, GoodTunes, etc. The main GoodLink software can not be deleted yet.
3. Pin reset the device.
4. Repeat step 1 and then delete the rest of GD & GL file.
5. Pin reset one more time for good measure and then Hotsync.

Deleting applications and data from your Treo device

http://kb.palmone.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=PalmSupportKB,ts=Palm_External2001,case=ref(delapps

To delete an application from your device (that is, to permanently remove or uninstall the application so that the icon no longer appears on your screen and the memory on your device is released):

Go to Applications

Open the Menus (info).

From the App menu choose Delete.

Tap the name of the application you would like to delete.

Tap on the Delete button. Tap on the Yes button to confirm that you wish to delete the chosen application.

Note 1: Some applications, including those that were pre-installed on your handheld, cannot be deleted. If an application cannot be deleted, it will not appear in the list. The built-in applications do not occupy any of your device’s memory as they reside permanently in Read Only Memory (ROM).

Note 2: If you wish to delete “hidden” files on your device which do not appear on the Delete list in the Launcher, you need a third-party application such as FileZ or Z’Catalog. You may run the risk of losing your data or synchronization ability if you delete programs or data required by your handheld. Use of these applications is not supported by Palm.

How to determine the OS version on a treo 700

November 9, 2007

Depending on what is going on, you may need to determine what OS is on your PAlm device.  This is how you go about verifying this:

Click the Phone button

Click the options button

Go to the Options Tab

Select Phone Info

Reference what is in the Software field.

I had to dtermine this when a user complained about a treo 700 kept rebooting whenever you went into goodlink.  Their Palm OS version was a bit outdated so we updated this in order to see if it will resolve the problem.

*NOTE: remember, when you do rom updates, it erases all data from the palm device!

How to make built in contacts app the default on a treo 650 with goodlink

October 23, 2007
Description/Question: Making built-in Contacts app the default on a Treo 650 with GoodLink

http://www.chaddickerson.com/blog/2005/09/17/making-built-in-contacts-app-the-default-on-a-treo-650-with-goodlink/

Solution/Answer: Download and install FileZ (http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&prodid=9992) on the Treo. All this does is give you access to all the files on the Palm OS filesystem. This is a tool that must be used very carefully, since you can move, copy, and delete any files on the Treo, even ones you didn’t know were there.

Next, use FileZ to find the file
GoodAddressBookApp.prc on your Treo and select it and remove it.

Now the built-in Contacts database on the Palm became the default. The GoodLink contacts database still works, but you have to go into the GoodLink app, then navigating to it in the bottom pane.

Perform a soft reset once file is deleted.

How to Erase data on a Palm OS Treo

October 11, 2007

Description/Question: Resetting the Treo 650

What is a reset, how many kinds are there, and how do I do one?

web reference: http://mytreo.net/treofaq/Treo650Resetting

Solution/Answer: There are four kinds of resets for Treo 650: soft, warm, hard, and zero-out.

Soft Reset

Soft resets are a kind of general purpose reset, like rebooting a pc. This turns your device off, clears out anything that might be hung, and starts it up again. It is a soft reset you experience when your Treo suddenly turns itself off and automatically restarts. Some applications cause a soft reset after installation. Some just restart, and some let you know they will need to restart, please tap the button.

A soft reset can be performed by simply removing the back cover and letting the battery lose contact for a moment. If this fails to reset your Treo 650, you can poke a paperclip into the reset hole found under the battery. Several utilities also offer a soft reset feature from the software including ZLauncher and Initiate.

Warm Reset

A warm reset is used when something is causing your Treo to act funny. You can sometimes use it to avoid That Endless Loop Thingie (“TELT”). A warm reset is like going into Safe Mode on your pc.

To perform a warm reset, initiate a reset (via software, or removing the back cover), and hold the up arrow on the 5-way navigation pad as the Treo turns back on. When the Palm screen shows, let go and allow it to continue starting. At this point you can remove the software causing you problems if you know what it is.

Hard Reset

When all else fails!!! A hard reset will erase everything you have on your Treo (excluding what’s on the ROM, or what you have on your SD card). Do this only as a last resort and ensure that you have BACKED UP your data beforehand.

To perform a hard reset, start your reset in any of the ways mentioned above. This time, hold down both the up arrow AND the power button until the Palm screen appears. When the Palm screen appears, let go of the power button, then the up arrow. You will then be prompted (in many languages) to press up to erase all data, or down to abort.

Zero-Out Reset

A zero out reset will regress a device that has non-volatile memory to its factory-fresh state. When done correctly, it completely rewrites your device’s internal memory with zeros and ones, ensuring that any data is expunged. It should be used only if you want all information completely obliterated (example: you’re selling your handheld, or you’re sending it in for repair, and want to protect your privacy).

Read through these instructions before attempting the reset. We made this method of zero out reset extremely awkward to perform, so that it would not happen by accident. You may need the help of a dextrous friend if you find it too difficult to do by yourself.
Connect your device to its HotSync cable or cradle. The HotSync cable does not need to be connected to your PC, and it does not need to be connected to power.
Press and hold the Power button and UP on the 5-way navigator.
While continuing to hold Power and UP, press and hold the HotSync button on the HotSync cable or cradle. As you press HotSync, make sure your other finger doesn’t slide to LEFT or RIGHT on the 5-way navigator; it needs to be exactly on UP during the entire process. Although you are pressing the HotSync button, a HotSync operation should not begin.
While continuing to hold Power, UP and HotSync, press and release the RESET button on the back panel of your device (where’s the reset hole?). This is very difficult to do with only one person; you may wish to hold the stylus in your mouth and use your hands to press Power, UP and HotSync.
Release Power, UP and HotSync.
If you did this reset correctly, the screen of your device will go blank, and you will not be able to turn it on. The charging LED will not light up, even if it’s connected to power. It will appear to be “dead.” (any other activity — such as the Palm OS logo or a rainbow-colored Boot Log screen appearing — means the reset was performed incorrectly; try again)
Your device will appear “dead” for several minutes (up to 10 minutes). During this time, your device’s internal memory is being reformatted. If your device doesn’t appear “dead” for several minutes with the screen completely blank, the zero out reset was performed incorrectly; try again.
After several minutes, your device will “wake up” and the palmOne and Palm Powered logos will appear as if you had performed a hard reset. Eventually, you’ll be taken to a series of screens to calibrate the touchscreen and set date & time.
If you want your handheld to remain in factory state, stop here. If you want to restore data to your device, follow the steps for recovering after a hard reset (a zero out reset is a special type of hard reset).
