With Blackberry Authenication in BES 5, a list of characters that CANNOT be used as the password

April 11, 2011

A quick way to get to reinstall your blackberry server would be to use a “unsupported” character in the password. Of course, the install never mentions, or blocks you from using these characters, so I feel cheated. Here is the list of support and unsupported characters:

Supported characters include the following: ~, @, *, _, -, +, :, ?, /, space, {, }, [, ], .
Unsupported characters include the following: !, #, $, %, ^, (, ), &, =, ‘, “, ;, >, <, |, comma, \

If you use a unsupported character, RIM’s suggestion would be to uninstall the damned server. Of course, since I am doing a parallel install, that is what I did. If I had value in the database, I would have pushed harder to find out how to modify SQL to reset the password within the database.

After reinstalling with the proper password, I was able to login to the BAS as planned…what a waste of time!
