A day from hell!

August 13, 2008

Well, today just sucked.  I was sent to a client out in Montclair NJ at 9:15 AM.  His PBX went down and I am the second most skilled tech for his system.  It made sense to send me, so I didn’t complain.  I get on the train at 9:37 AM and wait for the train to leave.  The train gets delayed for 20 minutes.  Finally, the train moves again and I get off my stop.  I meet the client and he takes me to the PBX.

The PBX system is about 4 years old and was pretty cheap server for those days.  The chassis has 2 hot swappable SCSI drives, which is pretty cool.  Well, the reason why the server died is because the RAID controller failed.  We were slated to fix this on Friday, as we knew this was going to happen.  Unfortunately, it died Wednesday instead.  I go out and replace it when I notice that the new RAID controller is a full PCI slot as opposed to a 1/2 PCI slot.

SHIT

Well, I then try to rip out a RAID controller from another server.  The RAID controller, however, does not have any drivers and is ancient.  The client did not want to use this so he started calling around local shops.  He found one place that has a SCSI controller that he can sell.  It needs an adapter to go from 50 PIN to 68 PIN but he was ok with this.  We install the card and setup the drive.  I go to install windows and half way through, the install bombs.  It starts saying that files were corrupted and rebooted randomly in the middle.  I scratch my head, try another drive, and the same thing happens.  It seems that the bay chassis must of died.  I tried replacing the cables, so it is the only thing left…

SHIT

The client then says he has a IDE harddrive laying around.  He gives it to me and we find out that it is 120 GB.  Perfect!  I install it on the same cable as the CD-ROM drive and the thing fails to detect.

SHIT

I didn’t want to get involved in jumpers, so I install it on its own ribbon.  It works and I install windows.  I then install the PBX software and recover from a backup I did a few months ago.  Apparently, the PBX files were not being backed up by his server.  Who knew?  He told me they were.  Its a good thing I backed up the configs when we first found out about this problem.  Well, I get the PBX running and then the client says that he has a great idea!  Hes going to buy another IDE drive and we are going to remove the SCSI cage from the chassis and mount the IDE drives in there.  By this time it is 3 PM and I really wanted to jet out of there.  I mean, I am already 40 minutes south of NYC.  I need to make up this time…I reluctantly agree.

SHIT

He runs out and gets the drive and I start taking apart the chassis.  I get the bays out and we mount the IDE drives.  I go into BIOS to detect the drives and it fails.

SHIT

I play around with the jumper configuration but cannot find the jumper setup for the CD ROM Drive.  Eventually, I said, lets get the harddrives setup and mirrored, and we will revisit the CD ROM issue.  Booted into windows without a problem and setup the mirror.  NOTE: I need to research how to make the boot.ini boot from both drives.  I have forgotten how to do this.  The client then looks at me and says, now about that cd rom drive….

SHIT

We take the CD ROM out and start playing with the jumpers.  I figured eventually, I would find the correct combination.  I needed to make the CD ROM the master and the primary harddrive the slave.  The HD was already set to slave, so how hard could it be?  After 3 jumper configurations, I finally got it to work!  The computer boots up and the mirror is building.  I think I’m done, but alas, its never that easy.  Its 4 PM and now he wants me to look at the backup jobs to make sure they are running.

SHIT

I tried to add the altigen files to backup but the share fails to authenticate me.  I remember another time I had a mirror break and I was resyncing it that it turns off the shares.  I inform him of this and so we call it day.  He drives me to the train station and I barely miss the 4:45 train.  I looked up the schedule and say there was a 5:23 PM.  No big deal…

5:35 rolls around and I look at the schedule again.  Apparently, I cannot tell the difference from AM and PM as 5:23 was AM.  The next train will arrive at 6:17 PM.

SHIT SHIT SHIT!

I wait until 6:17 and board the train.  The train arrives in Penn station and I figured I would treat myself after an eventful day.  I took one of those bike taxis to grand central.  I get into grand central and just barely make the train.  That is where I stand today!  All in all, a very eventful day!

How to Turn on IE Emulation mode for Blackberry Device

August 12, 2008

The latest and greatest project is to get our blackberry devices to work with this website that my development team is creating.  Since I am the blackberry admin, it has fallen into my lap to get the blackberries to conform to standards.  One of the things that RIM has suggested is to turn on internet explorer emulation.

Open the browser on the BlackBerry device.

Click on the menu button and go to options Select Browser Configuration For Emulation Mode, select Microsoft IE.

Save and close.

This did not resolve the issue, but it was worth a shot!

How to turn on HTTP logs for Blackberry Server MDS?

World Wars Walkthrough

August 11, 2008

Another day, another game. Today’s game? World Wars!

I love strategy games so it is no surprise that I loved playing World Wars. I have used this strategy for up to 8 players so I must be doing something correct. First, choose a board where you can fortify your position. I like choosing spots where I have troops at the edge of the map. I’ve won in the middle, but you need a lot more luck. The annoying part of this game is that all troops move forward leaving yourself exposed. The other annoying part of this game is you do not get to choose where the troops go. Do not be too aggressive. Remember, if you lose your front line, you are prone to attack. Only attack one or two spaces at a time. Try to make it so when you attack, your middle part is not exposed. As time goes on, your middle grows in troops and then you can get slightly more aggressive. Also, it is better to be on defense than offense. Once you get later on in the game and you and your opponent has 8 sized units, let your opponent attack you. This shrinks his 8 unit to 1 if he loses and then you can attack this. Slowly you will be able to take the whole map and win the game. Good luck!

Anaksha: Female Assassin Walkthrough

Its been a great couple of walkthroughs! Why? I love sniper games! There has been a lot of them. The latest installment? Anaksha: Female Assassin! Here is what I have done so far…

Mission 1 – shoot the guy with the box of candy
Mission 2 – shoot the guy that pauses in front of twisted delight
Mission 3 – The alleyway has a lot of cigarette butts. Wait for a bald guy to come into that area and start smoking. Fire away.
Mission 4 – Shoot the street lamp above the school wall. Then shoot the guy running.
Mission 5 – Wait for the two guys to start smoking together. Then look for the third guy that looks the same as them to the left. Then shoot the smoking guy to the right. The guy to the left will run. Fire and kill him.
Mission 6 – wait for a guy to light up a cigarette. Fire at his jaw to blow it off
Mission 7 – shoot the guy with the tape in the eye. Then his brother will run to the right. Shoot him. Then shoot the tape
Mission 8 – The main guy will be coming from the left. Shoot him. Then take out the goons. They will be standing in the middle. If you shoot the main guy far enough away from them, they won’t run until you fire on one of them.
Mission 9 – Wait for the guy to stop at the window. Then fire a shot in the middle part of his head
Mission 10 – wait for both men to stand by the theaters. Shoot the one right behind the eyes and then the other. They don’t run, not sure why…
Mission 11 – The guy come from the left and stops to smoke a cigarette. Shoot him in the neck
Mission 12 – Shoot the first ear piece guy coming from the right to left. Then two will be together. Shoot the right guy. Then the left. The boss will be coming from the left to right. Shoot him in the neck
Mission 13 – There is some metal being held by a rope. When he runs under it, shoot it and then shoot the bomb. Why you wouldn’t just shoot the bomb is beyond me…

Clear Vision Elite Walkthrough

August 8, 2008

Another game another day! This day? Clear Vision Elite!

Note: I didn’t put the guys in order on the paper. Except for Aace, I put them in order that I beat the mission on. Also, due to Mr. Petroy’s level, I was unable to beat the game. Either I missed something, or there is a bug but I completed the mission but it never gave a success.

Aace Bradley – shoot the one on the middle right on top of the ship. Then shoot the guy to the right of him. Then shoot the next guy to the right and finish them all

Ernst Zimmerman – shoot his hat from the window. He is walking in the middle part of the mansion

Athir Nostri – shoot him after he shoots the other guy in the meeting

Tony Carter – shoot the power cord above his head and game over…

Stanistav Petroy – shoot the sleeping one and then the other guy. For some reason, I could never get a successful mission from this though…

Anders Mognussan – from the left to the right, count the 13th window and shoot

Mike fernando shoot the snipers before shooting mike. I found that going right to left worked best. Get both snipers on the right in view first, and take them out. then take the rest of em out.

Johan Kristoffersson – shoot the goons first, and then take out johan on the snow mobile. I didn’t zoom, I just got him while moving

How do I turn off the 24 or Military time on my Windows XP computer?

August 7, 2008

So it was really bizzare.  I come into work and noticed that my computer is was Military time.  I did the normal checked, going into Date/Time and there is nothing in there that shows how to change that location.  Then I remembered that it is in Regional and Language options.  If you have this happen to you, do the following:

Go to Control Panel, Regional and Language Options. Select the “Time” tab.

In the drop-down for the “Time format”, select a format that uses the lower-case “h” (Upper case is 24-hour format).

Its that simple!  Good luck and enjoy “normal” time again.  I know I am!

Blackberry – How to get authentication to work on Blackberry Browser

August 6, 2008

So, my company is now doing a little bit of mobile development.  They had read that MDS on the BES server should be able to handle authenication.  How it works, (or at least how I understand it) is that it uses the MDS as a proxy of sorts to use the internal BES to browse webpages instead of going straight out on the internet?  The benefit?  For most people, none.  For those that want to access intranet sites on their BB, the world.  Here is how you do it.  First have MDS installed.  This was already done for me.  Next, configure it to allow authentication.

1. In BlackBerry Manager, select <BlackBerry_Enterprise_Server_name>_MDS-CS_1.
2. Click Edit Properties.
3. In the Properties window, click HTTP.
4. Set Support HTTP Authentication to True, then click OK.
5. Restart the BlackBerry MDS Connection Service.

The end!  It worked like a charm!
