Can you import IMAIL webmail contacts into outlook

June 10, 2008

The short answer is yes! I had to do this for a user and it was a real pain. Luckily there was only about 30 contacts involved, but it involved a lot of data manipulation to do it. I would of wanted to do this with a couple hundred contacts!

Step 1. Get the al alias.txt from the user directory of the said user. My alias.txt was located at c:\imail\virt_51\users\problemuser
Step 2. Put this file on problem user’s computer
Step 3. Manipulate the data. I used comma delimination to separate the name from the email address and so on.
Step 4. Import the file. In outlook click file, import/export. Follow the directions.
Step 5. Select the comma deliminiated file and search for *.*. You can get around this by actually saving the file the ext of a comma deliminated file, but I didn’t do this.
Step 5. Map the names, email, and whatever else to the proper directory. Click finish and you are done! I had some issues where the email address displayed as the name field but for the most part, I am deeming this project a success!

iPhone 2.0 New Phone New Price

You know what annoys me about the iPhone? I waited a few months for the first price decrease. I ended up spending 400 dollars on a 8 GB model. I mean, the phone does everything I need it to do so why not…

A month after I buy it, rumors of the iPhone 2.0 or iPhone 3G start rumbling around. I think to myself, meh who cares. It will probably cost more and I’ll pick it up in 2 years when my contract expires. As I read more about it, I find out the 8 GB model is only going to be 200 dollars!!! WHAT? Let me get this straight here. Better, for cheaper? How does that work? Well, lets go over a few of the gimics the iPhone will be released with and perhaps you can tell me.

1. Faster networks. Apple is trying to break into the Japanese markets and they need the phone to be a bit more zippy. (Don’t look at me, I quote zippy out of Steve Jobs mouth)

2. Better language support. While this feature excites those international users, I will hit the snooze button…

3. Exchange integration (This software should be released for the iPhone 1.0…not sure why we are getting excited that our cheaper brother would not have it…)

4. Better VPN Support (see point 3…)

5. App store (see point 3…) I do think that this will be cool. I would rather get the third party apps legally than having to hack the device…

6. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Well, nothing like saying screw you to your existing customers…AGAIN! Perhaps there will be a buying incentive for existing users to get a credit for the new device or something. I don’t know, but I just don’t see why the current iPhone is so much more than the newer iPhone….

DisplayLink USB Display Adapter Hardware Errors

Note: It seems that the videocard I had is defective. I am going to edit this post according and write up a new review after using the adapter for a couple of days.

I absolutely love the concept of a external videocard. Never the need to open your computer again and install that dual head video card. Expand to three monitors on a laptop! The possbilities are endless, except if you have the DisplayLink USB Display Adapter! First of all, the branding for this product stinks!

NOTE: I am told by the development company that this is because they don’t actually brand their product. They sell the ship and other companies brand it. Branding should be better, but that is neither here or there…

I got the unit second hand off of my co-worker and he had lost the drivers for it. It took me several hours to find the drivers because the only thing the unit says is USB Display Adapter. It never says displaylink! I found the drivers by comparing the picture from stores selling the product. Eventually I was like, OMG THAT IS MINE! I download the drivers and everything works well. I am thrilled! Then things start to go south….

Day 0: Excitement!

I just installed the product and it works great! I have had no issues so far!

Day 1: Blue banding

I now see blue streak while doing dos scripting. I don’t mind..its just dos! The blue kinda makes it more fun!

Day 2: Blue takeover

All pictures are now tainted with blue on it. Meh, who cares! I mostly read text from the second monitor anyways. I can live with that.

Day 3: Random pixels

Hmmm it seems I am getting random graphics errors on the display now. That’s weird.

Day 4: Denial

I can make this work! I mean, the pixel errors are getting worse but its ok! I can do it!

Day 5: Project failed

At this point, the second monitor is completely unusable. I have tried to do everything I can think of to get this to work. I tried updating the drivers, uninstall and reinstall, unplug the device from the base stand, unplug the device from the tower. I even read the FAQ for the device and it doesn’t even mention ANY of the problems I am having…

As it turns out, after writing this post, displaylink had contacted me directly and informed me that my adapter is defective and they sent me a new one for free. I am sending back the old one today. The tech support for this company rocks and so far the replacement unit has been working great. After a couple of days, I’ll post up a new review.
