Naughty Detective Review and Walkthrough

May 24, 2008

Another game?  Sure.  Name?  Abosultely!

Naughty Detective

This game is just another one of those point and click games of people doing naughty things.  If you think that this game is really “naughty” think again.  This game is the most lame of the naughty series.  It even tells you when to take the shot.  If you are looking for a challenge, think again.  If you are interested in getting the highest score, then this game might be good for you.  Basically, if you shoot right in the middle of the box that appears, you get the most points.  Also, try to get the action.  For example, in level 3, the guy in question winks.  If you get the shot of the wink, it is more points.  I don’t really know how winks are naughty, but I guess if you are winking at a waitress it goes towards cheating.  The game is good for a few laughs but I am disappointed with it.

How to Stop Unwanted Prerecorded Calls

May 23, 2008

For three days straight, I’ve been getting prerecorded calls from conservative christian groups asking me to expect something in the mail and pushing a right-wing agenda.  Each time I filed a complaint with the FCC, but they take months to track this down.  Here’s what I did to stop them.

I called the FCC, they now have a complaint hotline.  I just wanted to make sure that what they were doing indeed was illegal.  They provided their name, but they did not provide a phone number to be removed from their calling list.  Plus, they did not claim to be a tax-exempt organization on the phone, another requirement.  Thank you, FCC.

Then, I called my local carrier, which happens to be AT&T.  They insisted there was nothing they could do, but I pushed.  I asked about the specific number.  They said it was unlisted.  I asked for more information, they said it was a land line.  So I asked specifically, who is their local carrier who is responsible for the number?  They said “Lucre” was all they had.  He didn’t seem too happy to give this information, or to acknowledge that he had given it to me.  A quick search found lucre.net, a local carrier in Western Michigan, which matches the area code of the phone number.  Excellent.

I called their local number and immediately someone answered.  He took my complaint, acknowledged that it was illegal, and said he would call them up and ask them what was going on.

At the very least I got off the list.  Hopefully, I stopped lots of people from being harassed in their homes.

Faceless Corporate America.

As technology progresses, it seems that corporations are becoming more and more out of touch with their customers. Many would argue that companies lost their “mom and pop” feel long ago, and this is true, but even so, the problem has become ever more annoying in modern times, these days even telemarketing has become automated, with machines calling your home automatically to advertise offers.

What is really curious to me is why people are putting up with it? I mean honestly I have to say that anyone could come up with an idea as stupid as “hey, what if we just automated our call centers and made people press buttons to access the right department!” … However, I think most intelligent people would have concluded that such an idea would never work, because people would want to talk to a human being. But interestingly enough, this is an example of a stupid idea that became successful for the wrong reasons. Not because it was a ‘good thing’ or because it was innovative or good for the customer, but rather, because most customers didn’t take notice or care until it was too late, and shockingly enough, they still don’t! People keep calling up these companies and they keep waiting for hours on end to speak to someone, and then they bitch about it, but do nothing to stop it.

Companies claim that by doing this they can ensure ‘lower prices’ for their products, but I think we all know that they are full of manure. They’re not “passing on the savings” to us, they’re passing on the savings to their own pockets. And honestly, I think most people would pay a price premium for the peace of mind of having a tech support safety blanket should something ever go wrong.

Even more frustrating is that if what you want to ask isn’t on a cue sheet, the person on the other end of the line simply cannot help you… I mean seriously, you know a company has bad tech support when Googling for the answer yourself yields more results than speaking with their support people.

Recently at home, we re-did our electric box, and they had to remove the pole outside of our house where the wires come in, because apparently it’s currently against code for it to be where it was, it has to be at the corner of the house. So we had to call our service provider to come and take their wires off of the old pole and relocate them to the new one. We had to call them several times, no one on the other side of the line knew what in blazes we were talking about, one told us that they had to get approval from our power company to touch our set up (which was total bullshit), with each call we had to wait over an hour on the line, and we were forwarded to several different departments, each one had no clue whatsoever what we were talking about. We asked to speak to supervisors, and when they transferred us, we discovered that we had not been transferred to the correct person. It was pure hell. Then finally many calls later, we were informed that we had to pay them approximately 100 dollars for them to do this, which just added insult to injury, and was also total bullshit given that we’re already paying them a fuckload of money every month for their services. I guess their point is that their time is worth money. Oh yeah…? What about my time? Maybe I should send them a bill for all of my time that they wasted.

This is just unacceptable. Analysts everywhere keep saying that the future of business is services… Services this, services that, services everywhere. Honestly, if this kind of service is the best they have to offer, then I doubt they will do much. I think we need a business revolution, a return to a classic model of obeying the customers’ needs and wishes. Modern corporations are really subverting the will of the consumer, Digital Rights Management (DRM) being the largest example of this.

The modern idea is no longer “the customer is always right”, but rather, “the customer is our bitch”.

Google David Cook

He’s the American Idol winner, and the top of Yahoo!’s buzz list, but who is David Cook, really?  If you Google “David Cook”, then you’ll be one of many people who are searching for the hottest term on the internet.

Is he a good singer?  Does anyone really care?

Would you rather the other David have won?  Did you even vote?

Personally, I don’t care about American Idol at all.  I’d rather watch Chugga-chugga-chugga Dance.

Google Dalton Hatfield

Dalton Hatfield is an 11-year-old boy who sold his bike and his video games to raise money to support Hillary Clinton.  That seems crazy to me.  Why did she take it?

Nevermind that, some local politicans raised the money to replace his bike and video games with better ones.

That doesn’t sound ethical.  I’m sure there’s a campaign finance violation there somewhere.  Effectively, these local politicians are hidden donors.

If I have 10 children, can I now donate $23,000 additional to a campaign, $2,300 in each of their names?

Taking money from a child.  Bragging about it.  This is not Presidential.  This is not leadership.

Uncle Moe’s – ordered takeout

May 22, 2008

Well since there is no one to cover for me, I decided to get a free lunch.  This option always is there for me but I hate using it.  Why?  I mean, free lunch IS free lunch after-all.  The reason is you give up everything for it.  1. You need to eat at your desk.  2. If the phone rings, you need to answer it, take the call, and watch your lunch get cold as you help someone.  3. I like breaks.  It gives me some time to think about problems and resolve them in my head before I get back to the office.

Well so anyways, I needed to look up the number.  I went to trusty google and searched for uncle moe’s NYC and the first link was dead on!  Perfect I thought and ordered the food.  At that point, I was curious of what google found on good ol’ Uncle Moe.  I was then lead to the following information:

Location   341 7 AVENUE, BROOKLYN
Inspection date  April 2, 2008
Restaurant name  UNCLE MOE’S
Phone  718-965-0006
Violation points  44
Violations  Non-food contact surface improperly constructed
Toilets not maintained
Not vermin-proof
Food not protected from contamination
Improper hand washing facility
Mice
No Food Protection Certificate
Followup inspection required  Yes

At this point I was like, NO WAY, my favorate burrito place cannot have this many problem!  It can’t be, it must not be, and then I realized, that this was for the Brooklyn location.  THANK GOD!  I figured I better be safe and check the manhattan location and this is what I found:

Location   14 WEST 19 STREET, MANHATTAN
Inspection date  February 22, 2008
Restaurant name  UNCLE MOE’S BURRITOS
Phone  212-727-9400
Violation points  N/A
Violations  None
Followup inspection required  No

Well thank god!  I was worried that my food was going to be tainted with roaches and mice.  This put my mind at ease and allows me to eat in bliss.  This is good because Uncle Moe’s is the best burrito place around!  They are always nice and the fillings are always fresh and tasty.  I love getting an Uncle Moe burrito with churismo.  It is perfect.

My food is now here (under 5 minutes, how is that for quick delivery!) and I am now going to enjoy my food knowing that the resturant passed inspection!

Sprint To Impose 5GB Monthly EVDO Cap

When comparing Sprint and Verizon’s EVDO service, Verizon usually came up short, given their 5GB monthly cap, and terms of service that restricts everything but browsing and e-mail. However, with Sprint suffering through a rocky financial stretch, it looks like their CEO has decided that customers were getting too much, for too little. drew  directs my attention to a leaked memo posted on the dslreports.com forum, which says monthly caps are coming:

Quote

Sprint reserves the right to limit throughput speeds or amount of data transferred and to deny, terminate, modify, or suspend service if usage exceeds 5GB per month in total or 300MB/month while off-network roaming. Check your subscriber agreement rights on Sprint.com.

There’s no word yet just how tough enforcement will be. You may have to cross the bandwidth gestapo at Sprint several times during the year in order to have your wrist slapped. Sprint’s CEO, in a meeting with employees, apparently told them he believes the caps will only really impact about 1% of their EVDO user base.

Source: http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Sprint-To-Impose-5GB-Monthly-EVDO-Cap-94576

Now with that said, if this is true, it will not bode well for me.  I believe that I am one of the 1% of users.  I use the card about 3-4 hours a day 3 days a week.  During this time, I am actively browsing the web and have email open.  The email is the key component here, as outlook is a bandwidth PIG!  I need to look up my statements and see how much bandwidth I am really using.  If this change is truely going to happen, I am going to cancel my service with sprint and move to verizon.  I have asked other laptop users I’ve sat with and inquired about the dead spots and they said that their service works like a champ.  I always get about 1 to 2 dead spots during my train ride.  Of course, I think I use it more (irc demands continual connection) that your average user wouldn’t notice.  If I fly under the 5 gig cap, verizon it is!  Time will tell…

Should I upgrade to Sierra Wireless 597E?

OK, well for those of your that do not know, a Sierra Wireless 597E is a card that allows me to get broadband access to sprint’s networks.  I’ve had the Novatel Merlin EX720 card for a long time and very happy with it.  Every once and awhile, I check around and make sure that I have the best bang for my buck.  I mean, the Merlin card works great, but what if another card blows its socks off?  Well, after doing some research, it seems that there is NO benefit to upgrading from what I can tell.  Here are the specs between the two cards:

Sierra Wireless 597E, Express Card

  • Express Card – works in Windows and Linux laptops and Macbooks
  • Rev A Ready
  • Broadband-like download speeds where availableSierra Express Card 597E
  • Flip-up antenna and an external port (to attach signal booster antenna)
  • Sprint PCS Connection ManagerTM Software
  • New chipset that supports increased upload and download speeds
  • Backward compatible with all versions of the Sprint Vision and Power Vision networks
  • OS Support: Windows Vista, XP, 2000, Mac OS X, Linux
  • Express to PC Card Adapter Included
  • One Touch Activation! Software is Stored on the Device. No CD Needed.
  • Updated User Guides
  • Price – $329 (before any discounts)

Novatel Merlin EX720, Express Card

  • Express Card – works in Windows laptops and Macbooks
  • Rev A Ready
  • Broadband-like download speeds where availableNovatel Merlin ex720 express card
  • Flip-up antenna and an external port (to attach signal booster antenna)
  • Sprint PCS Connection ManagerTM Software
  • New chipset that supports increased upload and download speeds
  • Backward compatible with all versions of the sprint Vision and Power Vision networks
  • OS Support: Windows Vista, XP, 2000, Mac OS X
  • Price – $329 (before discounts)

Now, it seems that the only benefit the newer card has (Sierra Wireless 597E for those of you that forgot) is better mac support and a bigger antenna.  While the bigger antenna would probably yield better service (logic speaking) I do not get a lot of dropped zones on my 1.5 hour train ride.  Both cards operate on the same network speeds and both cards are compatible to my laptop.  For those of you that do not have express slots, I would advise you to look into the USB alternatives.  Laptops do not come with PCMIA slots anymore, so investing in that technology would be foolish.  With that said, I do not see any reason to upgrade at the time.

My Addiction to BottleCaps

May 21, 2008

I’m in trouble now.  I’ve become addicted to BottleCaps.  Remember those candies that came in a big roll and they tasted like soda pop?

I really only eat them for the Cola and Root Beer flavors.  The Cherry, Orange, and Grape aren’t so original.  I always take a handful out of the box, eat all the Cherry, then the Orange, then the Grape.  When only the Cola and Root Beer are left, I alternate off eating one then the other.

Target sells them in jumbo size boxes, and I’m buying them two at a time.  Someone help me, please.

What is Hillary Clinton doing in Florida?

Hillary Clinton has lost her chance to secure a majority of pledged delegates.  Barack Obama’s lead is going to continue to grow.  She needs to limit this growth if she has any chance of securing the nomination.  This means she needs to be in South Dakota, Montana, and Puerto Rico.  What is she doing in Florida?

Is she telling those voters that they should feel disenfranchised because the DNC isn’t going to seat their delegates?  Is she leaving out the detail about the state itself being responsible for the scheduling of the primary?  What could she possibly be saying that would have any positive effect on the Democrats’ chances in this race?

Hillary Clinton has no business in Florida.  If she doesn’t care about the races in Montana, South Dakota, and Puerto Rico, then she needs to concede and drop out of the race.  Moving the goalposts is not a fair way to proceed.  If she does care about those races, then she needs to be spending her remaining time there, fighting for the only remaining votes that matter.

It’s time for the superdelegates to end this.  There are 212 of them left, and only 63 of them need to come out for Obama to end this charade.  Come on, Rahm Emanuel,  Joe Biden, Harry Reid, Jim Webb, Dennis Kucinich, Jim Clyburn, Donna Brazile, we know who you’re supporting.  Make it official and get this superdelegate movement going, before Hillary disenfranchises our voters any more.
