Why did someone log into my [work] computer?

May 6, 2008

Now just to give a little background notes.  I work from home two to three days a week.  This means that my dedicated work computer sits idly for little grubby hands to fuck around with.  Mind you, I lock the computer, but this cannot stop all.  Oh no, it just makes it worse.  It just means that the people that should know better don’t.  Follow the bouncing email chain and now the suffering that it has caused me.

EMAIL TO TECHS AT MY COMPANY

Hello,

I come in this morning and see that administrator has logged into my computer.  Why did someone log into my computer?  Due to this, my outlook is now corrupted and getting the following error when trying to create a new mapi profile:

“The time limit for logging on was reached while waiting for system resources.  Try again.”

“MAPI 1.0 [000004C2]

I’m trying to figure out how to resolve this now.

REPLY FROM DIRECTOR OF IT

That was me.  I was testing a new app.

IT DIRECTOR
MY REPLY TO ALL TECHS

Does the new app hose outlook?  Did you uninstall it afterwards?  If not, I would like to know what this app does to stem any other issues I may be facing.  There isn’t much on google for the errors that I am receiving.

PS: What is the point of a lab if we don’t use it.
Seriously, why is the director of IT using my computer to test shit?  He has his own computer.  A matter of fact, he has 20 computers at his disposal to use, no reason to touch mine.  So now, my outlook is completely fucked up.   I am trying to repair outlook to see if that will assist in any way.  If it does not, I’ll be forced to do an uninstall and reinstall.  I’ve spent 3 hours trying to resolve a problem that should of never happened in the first place.  The worst part?  None of this labor is billable.  I could be doing things that can contribute to my bonus rather than cleaning up other people’s messes, ON MY OWN COMPUTER?!!!!

You should bill your time to the director of IT.

If only that worked. I think I am going to complain to the president. My computer and my time a wroth more than that! 2.5 of wasted time can be the difference between 600 dollars or 1000 dollars of bonus!

Stop your whining. Tell me something, did you buy the computer that is in the office? Oh wait, it’s the companies computer, not your personal property. I wish IT department could send a bill to users, but we can’t all have our wish.

    Bob,

I am the IT department… :) And also for your information, my time is worth the cost of the computer. When my hours are billable, it is billed at a rate of 175 dollars an hour. I lost 2.5 hours therefore, the company lost 437.5 dollars and that move could cost me roughly a grand if I miss my top bonus tier by 2.5 hours. I believe this all would pay for the cost of the computer, no?

SO what you could have done those 2.5 hours never got done?

Work with clients. I am an IT consultant. My job is to help people. If email is not functioning, I cannot help people, therefore, I cannot bill out my time. If I desired, my company has enough work for me to be billable 24×7 and still have more work to do…

    Understand now?

I see… So in closing, because you couldn’t get on your PC you couldn’t do ANYTHING billable for those 2.5 hours.

If your company has enough work for you to cover 24×7 I can’t believe you wouldn’t have a laptop.

    Bob,

I do have a laptop but how does that resolve my desktop issue? The laptop is built for travel and the desktop has office apps installed on it. For example, my laptop does not have an application which allows me to make conference calls while the desktop does. The laptops are not designed to replace the office computers. Also, this would not fix my desktop, now would it?

you sound like a little fucking bitch!! You’re not much of a consultant if you cant fix your own Outlook. Fucking faggot shut your mouth.

Normally I delete comments with no content and a bunch of profanity. I figure I would respond to you though. What part of, I resolve the issue in 2.5 hours do you not understand. If I could not fix the problem at all, then the outcome would be different, no?

Sigh, the problem with people these days is that they do not know how to read!
