Computer stupidity comes in twos

December 10, 2007

So just like last time, computer stupidity comes in twos!  I had a user walk over to me and ask “I don’t have the shared drive, can you set it up for me?”

Now let me give you a little bit of background on the shared drive.  We have the network setup that whenever you login, you automatically get a S drive mapped which points to the server in this office.  Everyone has access to it, and everyone should use it!  All good stuff for this office gets put there.  Regardless, everyone has the S drive without fail!

So I walk to her computer and double click my computer.  I then see the S drive.  I tell her, there is the S drive.  Her response is oh….

Then I stand there awkwardness for 15 minutes asking her if she needs anything else.  She fumbled through the folders and I still did not tell me that I could leave.  Eventually I just left :)

Tower Defense Walkthroughs and Reviews

I couple days ago, I posted a walkthrough for Helix Defense, and last week I reviewed the Casual Collective, home to the Multiplayer Desktop Tower Defense. Koopa has been reviewing Tower Defense games for quite a long time, and he’s reviewed quite a bit of them. Let’s review his reviews.

Most recently, Koopa did a review of Flash Empires 2: Christmas Crusades. He said it was “cute” and you should play it. Last week, Koopa reviewed the ever popular Fratboy Girlfriend TD. Lots of people have been playing that game, apparently. Last month, Koopa gave a walkthrough and review of Shock Defence, which he said was one of his personal favorite game.  Bloons Tower Defense is a fun game about monkeys breaking balloons, but with small replay value.
So there you have it. I hope that you enjoy these tower defense games.

Outlook Annoyances

Well it seems that I have yet another user with problems in outlook.  People just do not know how to manage their size properly!  No matter how many times I tell them, they do not listen.  The conversation went something like this:

User: please help me!  I keep getting this system administrator message!

Koopa: Then delete it.  You should also bring the size of your inbox down.

User: What?  Come quick!  It keeps happening…

Koopa: But if you de…..ok lets go!

User: see look at these messages!  How do I delete them!

Koopa: select them and hit the delete button

User: how do I select multiple items to delete?

Koopa: Click the first one, select shift, and click the last one

User: OH WOW!

User: How do I empty my deleted items?

Koopa: Right click on deleted items

User: Right click?

Koopa: Yes right click with the mouse

User: Right click…oh right click.  Where

Koopa: On deleted items

User: uhhhh ok…. *right clicked on deleted items

Koopa: Now select empty deleted items

User: Where?

Koopa: empty deleted items

User: AH OK!

User: THANK YOU!

Koopa: No problem!

And this is your average outlook problem that people have.  I don’t understand how people do not know the concept of right click by now!  I can understand how they wouldn’t know where to check how big their mailbox is, but how can you not know right click!  How can you not know how to use outlook at all?!?!?!?!  Oh well…another day in paradise!

Review of ProgressQuest

Lets spice it up a bit!  I know, there is no reason to stop doing a good thing!  Don’t stay away from the web games!  DON’T DO IT!  I forbid it!  REALLY! Wait…what?  Lets focus and try again!

The next game to review is ProgressQuest!  This is a tiny program that you run and your computer runs through a quest.  You have the option to name your character but not much else!  You sit back and watch your character made dumb moves and there isn’t a lick you can do about it!  Check out the site here!

http://progressquest.com

Now there is a slight entertaining aspect of it.  First of all, there is a hall of fame where you have the chance to become number 1!  All you need to do is let the game play.  You stop the game, you don’t get higher ranked.  You keep playing, you get ranked higher.  Simple as that!  The only thing standing behind you and getting number 1 status is time!  Who doesn’t have that?!?!?!

Secondly to sport you and your friends, you can make a guild.  If you don’t have any friends, you can join myself and Vir4030 in the guild #Videogames!  We are so cool…no one can stop us!

I have created a Greater Gnome with the class of Lowling.  His name is Koopa (are you surprised?) Right now the poor chap is a level 3 working hard to better himself.  He will be the best little gnome a koopa can be!  YOU CAN’T STOP ME NOW!

Well the game itself is kinda boring but strangely addictive.  You let the game run and check back and see how you are doing.  You can then check how you are doing on the hall of fame records and watch as you climb the stats!  If you let the game run long enough, it will calculate the cure for cancer too!  Who does not want that?!?!?!?! (this game does not REALLY find the cure for cancer…or so they want you to think!)

I give the game-play value a 1 since well…there is none.  The replay value, however, is an addicting 9.  You just let the game run and can’t stop!  I recommend this game to all the people at work who have nothing better to do than watch the status bar go across and have your virtual creature grow to become quite kickass!

The Art of Simulating Baseball Games

Over the past two months, I have simulated hundreds of thousands of baseball games. This is all in the name of bringing baseball fans a fantasy game which feels like a real game. I set up a league with 24 players in 4 divisions and simulated season after season, checking all of the stats against the real historical MLB stats to make sure everything is realistic. I ran countless game simulations to test out the home field advantage to make sure it came out exactly as it should.

I’ve always been happy with the results of these simulations. There was one time when I thought I had completely lost the balance that existed from the beginning. As I started training the players in order to simulate a game between two teams of 28-year-olds instead of untrained 18-year-olds, the game started breaking down. I had a very angst-filled day as I tried to figure out what the problem was, and eventually worked out a new balance for the statistics that held up through training, restoring the balance.

Once, while I was simulating entire seasons to look at the stats, I saw a pitcher that had a “PG” stat on him. I’d never seen this before, and totally had no idea what “PG” stood for. It took me about five minutes until I delighted myself realizing that was the stat for “Perfect Game”. I only saw this once in all the simulations I did, although admittedly, only a small portion of the simulations were done in a way that I would have noticed. So I consider that pretty good, too. It’ll be fun the first time someone actually has a perfect game while playing with their own teams on the website.

The website is SimYard, and it will likely open in a couple of weeks. Keep checking back for updates.

Project Monkey Goon update – Yes I am that quick!

Well the first thing I was always trying to figure out is how to tell where to find a page ranking!  I mean, I don’t want to link myself into clubs that are not members of the club!  Apparently, a website regarding the page ranking is too hard to find.  I had to take other measures.  I had to do the unthinkable!  And no I did not pay money!  I know, you all thought it had to do with money…but it didn’t.  Really it didn’t.  I swear.

I had to install the Google Toolbar!

I always dislike the google toolbar because it just adds overhead to my browser and I’m sure it reports all of my internet usage back to google.  If I read their massive terms of agreement, I’m sure I can find it in there.  Alas, I am too lazy.  But I’m sure it is there!  SO THERE!

Toolbars are also a disease…once you allow one to get installed, all of a sudden you have 50 and you cannot use your browser at all!  I have seen it happen.  Too many times!  Of course that would not happen to me. (I hope!)   I do not like having the ability to install the toolbar open though since it will prevent this…but I must in order to find sites with good rating to measle my link on there!  I will spawn my site onto a few 5 rated sites….oh I will

 MWAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAH!

I have the power!  Uhm yeah!

Google pageranking is the devil!

My god I believe that google PageRank is the devil!  It is the internet form of being popular.  You need to hook up in circles, and get your page linked as a cool site.  You need to qualify (or pay) people in order for you to join their club!  The people who got the ranking are snug and the people who don’t have a ranking are annoyed and dismayed.

There has to be an easier way to get a site listed as a cool site!  I mean, come on!!!! No wonder why everyone was pissed that google erased the page rankings a few months ago.  I would be pissed too!  It is a lot of work (or money) to get yourself into the graces of the cool people only to have to move schools and start over again!  All of the links and work you did prior erased!  Its craziness!!!

Well, as you can see, I am making it my mission to get myself a google page rank.  Right now I would be happy with a 1.  That is my goal.  This is my new project.  Will I succeed, will I fail?  I believe you, as readers, will decide!  I am going to deem this mission Project Monkey Goon!  That is right, Project Monkey Goon!  Any problems with this?  I think not.

Wish me luck, I think I will need it!  The goal is to give a weekly update on project monkey goon and the success and failures I will have.  I do not plan on paying people to be my friends, but oviously this would be the easier route.  Only time will tell if I resort to this :P

Review and walktrhough of PacXon

And the review on the name game on the block is……PACXON!

http://www.addictinggames.com/pacxon.html

This is two classics coming together!  This is PacXon!  You cannot stop playing such a great game when Pac man meets the wall closing game (I am completely blanking out on the name of it) just makes for a classic hit!  There are a few twists in the game but basically, you need to trap the ghosts in walls.  If the ghosts hit your wall while you are completing it, you lose.

Simple right?

Well now lets go over the slight modifications.

Power Pellet – Classic pacman icon.  You eat it and then you can eat the ghosts

Cherry – You move faster

Banana – Ghosts move slower

Ice cream – Ghosts stop moving for a while.

This game is definitely worth a play!  I give the game a solid 9 and replay value a 8!  You will get sucked in….be aware…..be very cautious!
