Computer bliss

September 30, 2007

I have finally replaced my desktop computer with a newer tower.  It is much nicer and has a lot more memory.  It is a little used and beat up but still 100 times better than the old one.

 Specs:

p4 3mhz

1 gig of ram

The rest is pretty standard.  The only downside is the cd rom doesn’t work.  It is a good thing I have an external one :)

Corrupt SFC.dll file

September 28, 2007

I need to do the following to a windows 2000 computer…  Macafee keeps detecting a virus but it seems that it is just a corrupt file.  I cannot setup a printer due to this…

Windows 2000
Follow these directions to work around the problem on computers that run Windows 2000. To perform these steps, you need the installation media for your language version of Windows and your local administrator password. This password may differ from your domain administrator password.

To restore a clean copy of Sfc.dll

  1. Insert the Windows 2000 installation CD in your CD-ROM drive .
  2. Restart the computer.
You may need to press a key when requested to start from the CD.
  3. When you see the screen that says “Welcome to Windows Setup”, press the F10 Key and follow the on-screen directions.
  4. Select the Windows installation to which you want to log on.
  5. Type your local administrator password.
  6. At the command prompt, type the command in the following format and then press Enter: expand <CD drive letter>:\I386\SFC.DL_ <Folder or Drive to expand to>:\Sfc.dllFor example, if your CD Drive is D: and Windows is installed on the C: drive, type the following text and then press Enter:

    expand D:\I386\sfc.dl_ c:\winnt\system32\Sfc.dll

  7. At the command prompt, type exit and press Enter to restart the computer.

How to turn off user account control in Windows Vista

  1. Open Control Panel.

  2. Under User Account and Family settings click on the “Add or remove user account”.

  1. Click on one of the user accounts, for example you can use the Guest account.

  2. Under the user account click on the “Go to the main User Account page” link.

  1. Under “Make changes to your user account” click on the “Change security settings” link.

  1. In the “Turn on User Account Control (UAC) to make your computer more secure” click to unselect the “Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer”. Click on the Ok button.

  1. You will be prompted to reboot your computer. Do so when ready.

In order to re-enable UAC just select the above checkbox and reboot.

It took me about a 1/2 an hour to find this while at a client site.  Something so simple yet took me forever to do.  Anyone that hates change should turn off User Account Control… :)

Project Failure…why aren’t you failing?

It seems that this site is actually generating some traffic off the web.  So far, nothing overly exciting but here is a few (only) hits that I have received.

1. The post about being an IT GOD.  This generated the most hits (probably from the same person) and I received a comment on it as well.

2. Google roped up a person from my story of the reversed mouse issue

3. The kb article on offline syncing.

It amazing me that by doing nothing, traffic is generated.  It will be even more amazing if I get repeat traffic hitting my site.  Time will tell!

Forgetful Elephant

So today is one of the days that I travel to other offices in my district.  All is going fine and dandy until I realize that I have forgotten to take something with me last night for this trip….

 MY LAPTOP!

Thankfully I believe I will be able to swing not having it around today but how stupid am I?  I am going to be installing a switch and I hope that it is preconfigured…if not, NO SWITCH FER YOU!

Sometimes I am such an idiot

Motivation…where art thou

September 27, 2007

I am sitting here at work feeling completely unmovidated.  The only – I repeat – ONLY thing I have to do is update documentation which takes all of 20 minutes and I just do not feel like it.  I have been putting it off for 2 weeks now…and my boss is really into documentation.  There is no reason why it is not done.  I totally need to get my ass in gear.  I am hoping that coffee helps….

Project Failure! How have we failed thee

September 26, 2007

So Project Failure seems to be a success.  I am failing nicely :)   It seems that without any advertising, one person made it to this site and felt to comment on my topic about me being an IT GOD!  So far, in order to have traffic come to the site, GOD must be mentioned.  I will therefore, mention GOD about 50 times in this post to increase the floor traffic!

GOD GOD GOD GOD GOD GOD GOD

In conculsion, I believe that I am keeping up with my promise to continue to fail at the whole blog thing.  And this is why bloggers hate you :)

Parking Grarage of hell

So I thought driving is bad.  My parking garage is much worse.

There are turns that lead to dead ends.

There are turns that lead to the wrong way on one way roads.

There are turns that lead to blockade of cars.

It is the worst parking garage that I have ever had to deal with.  Normally I arrive at 8:30 and I can park right in front.  Today, due to me going to another office first, I had to park in the lower levels of HELL!  I am not even sure where I parked so now I will have to wander around the parking lot like a crazy person going…car…car…come out come out wherever you are!

This distinctly reminds me of a Seinfeld EP….

Blackout pending…1.2.3

September 25, 2007

One of my offices is going to have a planned power outage.  No big deal right?  Well one would think so.  Just like everything else, this is getting blown wayyyy out of porportion.  I have had to block out two days to prepare for the blackout….REALLY?!?!?!?!?!  It is not that big of a deal.

Power goes out.  Computers turn off.

Power goes on, Computers turn on.

What is so wrong with this?  Sigh oh well…at least it gives me something to do!
